13: What is Love?

James Finley

I thought it would be a great idea to define what love is to me, and found that it is actually a lot harder for me to fully grasp love with words, and that is when I realized that it should be. You see, it is hard for us to define eternity, right? Hard to grasp the infinite, yes? Well, infinity is a God thing, same with eternity. And guess what? So is love! Love is the one thing that God prevailingly shows towards us, and when we feel love we start to see God's greatest gift. For us to wrap love into words is as hard as it is to wrap God into words. Love is defined in the Bible (1 Corinthians 13) as eternal, without blemish, indestructible, and more. The description of love feels like the descriptions of God, because God is love. To be in love is to see the face of God! Love is the strongest, most powerful emotions that the human mind is capable of, and is also the most corruptible. Love is something we have this need for. It is said that there is a void in our lives that can only be filled by God's love, and many try to fill that void with anything that they can to end the need for God. Lust, immorality, bodily destruction, and many kinds of sin, yet nothing can fill it. I know that once that void is filled, and one accepts the loving embrace of Christ Jesus, that one can truly understand that endeavor for completion, and also understand pure love. I realize now why God's love never fades. One could argue that God is ignorant, that an omnipotent God would clearly know that his creation would turn against him, and not create them in the first place. But, you see, the reason he created even though he knew what would happen was because of his love. He loved his creation so much that he created them despite their eventual turn! Love puts others first. Christ came here, knowing his destiny, and died for us. This was him putting his life and love down for us. This is what love is about. The greatest form of love is self-sacrifice, and it is by love that we were created, and love that we are recreated. Love forgives all, and holds nothing against. This is what allows it to go on through everything. So I guess to wrap up, it is through my love for Nicole that I better understand Christ's love for me. It is then also by this understanding of God's love that I can better understand my love of Nicole. It doesn't always make sense; it isn't always of rhyme or reason; but life doesn't work by that stuff. God doesn't work by that stuff. What I do know is that I can put faith in love, and that is all that matters to me.
